Sergio Focardi (born July 6, 1932 in Florence , † June 22, 2013 in Bologna ) was an Italian physicist and university professor .

Life

After attending school in Florence, Focardi won the admission competition of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa in 1950 . He completed his physics studies there in November 1954 with distinction. He then taught as an assistant at the University of Pisa .

In 1956 Focardi moved to the University of Bologna .

In the early 1960s, Focardi spent his time at CERN in Geneva .

From 1971 Focardi was re-elected twelve times to the Council of the Società Italiana di Fisica . In 1973 he became director of the Bologna section of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) (until 1976). In 1977 Focardi became full professor at the University of Bologna after a month-long interlude at the University of Messina . 1980–1989 he was chairman of the faculty of mathematical , physical and natural sciences at the department of the University of Bologna in Cesena . 1988–1990 Focardi was President of the Coordinating Committee of the Italian Scientific Societies (COASSI). From 1992–2000, Focardi was President of the Council of the Computer Science Course in Cesena. He founded these courses in Bologna and Cesena and an ecology course in Ravenna .

In 1989, the biophysicist Francesco Piantelli at the University of Siena observed an unusual generation of heat during experiments with gangliosides in a hydrogen atmosphere on a nickel base . Piantelli informed Focardi of this, and both decided to investigate this more closely with a working group. The group was joined by Roberto Habel at the University of Cagliari and member of the INFN. After long investigations, they finally presented their experiment in energy generation by a low-energy nuclear reaction (LENR) at a press conference in the Great Aula of the University of Siena in 1994 , which differed significantly from the experiment presented in 1989 by Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann . However, Antonino Zichichi's group at CERN was unable to reproduce this experiment. Piantelli and Focardi stuck to their claim, although attempts by others to reproduce remained unsuccessful. Together with the inventor and entrepreneur Andrea Rossi, Focardi developed the E-Cat ( Energy Catalizer ) on the basis of his experiment , which they presented to the public in Bondeno in 2011 . Rossi did not allow a thorough examination of the device. Several experts therefore refrained from making a final assessment. LENR blogger Krivit compiled evidence that Rossi systematically tampered with the device to create the impression of significant energy production.

On June 22, 2013, Focardi died after a long illness.
