Andreas Daniel Onea (born July 9, 1992 in Zwettl ) is an Austrian swimmer in disabled sports of Romanian origin. He won five bronze and two silver medals at world and European championships. In 2008 he held the world record in the 50 m chest on the short course. In 2012 he won the B-final over 200 m breasts at the state championships for non-disabled people of the Austrian Swimming Association .
Life
On May 3, 1998, Onea and his family had a serious car accident in which his left arm was amputated. In summer 1999 he began during rehabilitation at RZ White farm in Klosterneuburg with swimming as therapy. Since then he has been swimming for the BSV Weißer Hof . In 2010 he passed the Matura (matriculation examination) at the BRG Linzer Straße in Vienna. Since 2010 he has been studying economics and social sciences at the Vienna University of Economics and Business .
Career
After Onea started swimming for therapeutic purposes, he started at the age of 9 in several small national competitions. At the age of 12 he became national champion in the 100 m chest for the first time . In 2005 he started for the first time at the International German Championships in Berlin.
In 2007 he won the youth final at the International German Championships in the 50 m breaststroke. At the age of 16, he was the youngest Austrian athlete in the line-up at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, where he came 6th in the SB8 class over 100 m chest. After the Summer Games, he swam a world record over 50 m chest on the short course in October 2008.
In 2009 he won his first international medals at the European Championships in Reykjavík, Iceland , and the World Short Course Championships in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil. In both competitions Onea secured 3rd place over 100 m chest. At the 2011 European Championships in Berlin , he took 3rd place, also in his 100 m breaststroke discipline.
In August 2012 Onea succeeded in winning the B-final over 200 m breasts at the state championships for non-disabled people of the Austrian Swimming Association . At the Paralympic Games 2012 in London, he could not win a medal despite personal bests. In his top discipline 100 m chest he reached 4th place, only 26 hundredths separated him from bronze. A year later, in August 2013, Onea reached 2nd place in the 100 m chest at the IPC World Championships in Montreal.
