from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andreas Heusler (born March 8, 1802 in Basel ; † April 11, 1868 ibid) was a Swiss lawyer , legal historian , politician and journalist .

Heusler completed a law degree in Tübingen and Jena from 1821 to 1826 , which he completed with a doctorate in 1826 . During his studies he became a member of the Jena fraternity in 1820 and of the Germania Tübingen fraternity in 1821 . In 1828 he received his habilitation at the University of Basel . From 1830 to 1868 he was a member of the Basler or (after the cantons were split in 1833) of the Basel City Council . From 1831 to 1847 he was also a small councilor and took a seat in various state bodies. From 1831 to 1859 he was also a staff member and main editor of the Basler Zeitung . He wrote many political editorials, which made him the spokesman for the conservatives in Basel. With an article against the up-and-coming radicals, in which he disparagingly referred to the federal rifle flags as “shreds”, he provoked a scandal and was no longer elected to the Small Council. From 1850 he worked as a law professor and in 1867 held the dignity of university rector. Heusler wrote several constitutional and historical works, including a constitutional history of the city of Basel in the Middle Ages and a depiction of the Peasants' War of 1653.

Heusler was married from 1830. The lawyer and historian Andreas Heusler (1834–1921) was his son.
