Andreas Kneller
Andreas Kneller ( also: Kniller, Knüller, Knoller; * April 23, 1649 in Lübeck ; † August 24, 1724 in Hamburg ) was a German composer and representative of the North German organ school .
Andreas Kneller comes from a family of artists. Both Andreas' well-known older brother Sir Godfrey Kneller and his father Zacharias Kniller were painters. In 1667 Kneller was appointed the successor to the organist Melchior Schildt at the Marktkirche in Hanover . On December 1, 1685, at the suggestion of Johann Adam Reincken , he was elected to succeed J. Schade as organist at the St. Petri Church in Hamburg . The following year he married Reincken's daughter, Margaretha Maria. In 1723 he was retired in favor of his son-in-law Jakob Henke, who had been the deputy organist there since 1717. Kneller died a year later at the age of 75.
Works
As with many other composers at the North German organ school, only a few compositions are known today by Andreas Kneller. The following are handed down:
- three complete preludes (in F major, G major and D minor) and some fragments, as well
- a Partita in eight variations on Now come the Gentile Savior .
