Andreas Kumin

Andreas J. Kumin (born July 13, 1965 in Graz ) is an Austrian legal scholar. Since July 2005 he has headed the European law department in the international law office of the Foreign Ministry , and since October 2014 he has been teaching at the Institute for European Law at the University of Graz . In March 2019 he was appointed judge at the European Court of Justice until October 2024.

Life

Andreas Kumin attended the Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium Carnerigasse in Graz, where he graduated in 1983 . He then began to study law at the University of Graz , specializing in international law, European law, constitutional law and political science. He passed the first diploma examination in 1988 for a degree in translation studies (English, French and a basic course in Italian). He completed his law studies in 1987 as a Magister iuris , and in 1990 he received his doctorate in law . In 1991/92 he graduated from the École nationale d'administration with theDiplomas International de l'administration publique . He did his basic military service from October 1993 to May 1994, among other things, at the research department of the National Defense Academy.

Since 1990 he has worked in various positions at the Austrian Foreign Ministry, where he has been head of the European law department in the international law office since July 2005. From November 1994 to September 2000 he was Counselor at the Austrian Mission to the United Nations in Geneva .

Since October 2014 he has been a professor at the Institute for European Law at the University of Graz, and he is also a lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna , the University of Innsbruck and the Vienna University of Economics and Business .

In autumn 2018 he was nominated by the Federal Government Kurz I to succeed Maria Berger as a judge at the European Court of Justice . The originally nominated candidate Katharina Pabel withdrew her application at the end of June 2018. On March 6, 2019, the European Council appointed Kumin as judge at the European Court of Justice until October 2024. He took office on March 20, 2019.
