Andreas Martin Stelzer
Andreas Martin Stelzer (born October 29, 1954 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ; † November 9, 2007 in Chemnitz ; Signet: AMS) was a German painter, draftsman and graphic artist.
life and work
Stelzer grew up with two younger siblings, Gudrun (* 1961) and Michael (1957-2013), who were or are also artistically active. After school and parallel to his apprenticeship as a painter at VEB Housing Combine Karl-Marx-Stadt, he attended Axel Wunsch's drawing circle . Artistically a formative period in which he became a well-known figure as an autodidact in the established art scene. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 22 and went to hospital several times. Despite alcohol and pill addiction, the 80s and early 90s were his most productive. From 1982 he became a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR . Participation in district art exhibitions in Karl-Marx-Stadt and the Xth Art Exhibition of the GDR in Dresden in 1987 was a recognition of his talent. After 1989 he took part in group exhibitions in Munich, Innsbruck, Oberhausen and Düsseldorf, among others, and traveled a lot abroad. In 1990 he and friends founded the art association "Lanterne" and the artist group "Pachhütt" in the Wilisch valley, Drebach.
Stylistically, his work can be assigned to the Art Brut , in the broader sense of the painting of the Neue Wilde . Dubuffet and the artists of the CoBrA group were role models for him, in personal dealings with Klaus Hähner-Springmühl from Chemnitz . Elementary themes such as illness, fear, intoxication and sexuality dominate his work. In contrast, there are dense colors, spontaneous figuration and an almost childlike sense of humor, especially in the colored pencil drawings.
