Andreas Tietze (Turkologist)

Andreas Tietze (born April 26, 1914 in Vienna ; † December 22,  2003 ibid) was an Austrian Turkologist who was born and trained in Vienna.

Life

He studied Oriental Studies at the University of Vienna and began his career at the University of Istanbul , where he had sought refuge from the Hitler regime from 1938 due to his Jewish origins. He stayed there until 1958. He later worked at the University of California, Los Angeles , where he was Professor of Turkish at the Institute for Languages ​​and Cultures of the Middle East from 1958 to 1971. After decades in Turkey and the USA, he returned to the University of Vienna in 1973 as Professor of Turkic Studies. Until 1984 he was a faculty member at the Institute for Oriental Studies. Tietze published a large number of books and articles on subjects from lexicology and etymology to history and folk dance . He has received numerous awards for his significant contribution in the field of Turkish Studies.
