Andrei Bernevig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bogdan Andrei Bernevig (* 1978 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian theoretical solid-state physicist and director at the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics in Halle an der Saale .

Andrei Bernevig took part in the Physics Olympiad in Bucharest from 1994 to 1997 (and won international gold and silver medals). He graduated from Stanford University (bachelor's degree in physics and master's degree in mathematics in 2001), received his PhD under Shoucheng Zhang at Stanford University, and was then Associate Professor at Princeton University .

He deals with the application of topology in solid state physics, for example in the fractional quantum hall effect, and novel topological materials ( topological insulators , topological superconductors) and spin transport or spintronics . Together with Shoucheng Zhang , in 2005 he proposed the principle realization of quantum spin Hall states (see quantum hall effect ) in systems with spin-orbit coupling (verified in 2007 by a group led by Laurens W. Molenkamp ) and in 2006 with Taylor Hughes and Zhang a general mechanism for topological insulators before and especially its realization in quantum wells made of mercury telluride.

He also deals with ferrous high-temperature superconductors and predicted s-wave pairing there.

For 2016 he received the New Horizons in Physics Prize . In 2014 he received the Sackler Prize . In 2017 he was awarded a Guggenheim scholarship , in 2018 an Alexander von Humboldt professorship , with which he was appointed to the Free University of Berlin and the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics in Halle, where he became head of the theory department. For 2019 he was awarded the James C. McGroddy Prize for New Materials by the American Physical Society .
