Andrei Mironov (2014)

Andrei Nikolajewitsch Mironow ( Russian Андрей Николаевич Миронов ; born March 31, 1954 in Irkutsk , Soviet Union ; † May 24, 2014 in Slovyansk , Ukraine ) was a Russian journalist , dissident and human rights activist .

Life

Andrei Mironov was born in Irkutsk in 1954 as the son of two geophysicists and spent his childhood in Siberia and Belarus. He broke off his studies at Moscow's Mendeleev Institute for Chemical Technology and became involved in the samizdat movement for the dissemination of alternative literature that did not conform to the system. In 1985 he was arrested for "anti-Soviet activities" and eventually sentenced to four years in prison and another three years in exile. Mironov said he was subjected to a mock execution while in custody and was supposed to be forced to write a suicide note in order to fake his suicide. In 1987 he was released from prison as part of Mikhail Gorbachev's policy of glasnost and perestroika .

In the following years he worked as a human rights activist and supported prisoners who, in his opinion, were wrongly detained. During the First and Second Chechen Wars , Mironov helped the numerous Chechen war refugees.

Mironov was killed together with the Italian journalist Andrea Rocchelli on May 24, 2014 in skirmishes between the Ukrainian armed forces and pro-Russian forces in Slovyansk. He left behind his mother and two brothers.
