Andrei Balashov took part in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and 1980 in Moscow in the boat class Finn Dinghy part. After six of seven races in 1976 Balaschow was tied with Jochen Schümann at the top of the overall ranking. However, Balaschow finished the seventh race in fifth behind the third-placed Schümann, which means he missed the Olympic victory and received the silver medal. Bronze went to John Bertrand , who also had a chance of winning the gold medal. Four years later Balaschow won two of the seven races and made it onto the podium again in third place. With 47.4 points he won the bronze medal behind Esko Rechardt and Wolfgang Mayrhofer . Balashov won several Soviet championship titles in the Finn dinghy.
