Đorđe Andrejević Kun (Ђорђе Андрејевић Кун; born March 31, 1904 in Wroclaw ; died January 17, 1964 in Belgrade ) was a Yugoslav painter and graphic artist. He was a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (САНУ). Andrejević Kun became famous for designing the national coat of arms of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia .

Origin and career

Đorđe Andrejević Kun was born in Wroclaw, the fourth of five children of the Serbian graphic artist Veljko Andrejević Kun and his German wife Gertrude. In 1914 the family came to Belgrade . Đorđe Andrejević Kun learned the profession of printer and then studied painting at the Art School in Belgrade from 1920 to 1925.

On the mediation of the Belgrade businessman Ilija Ranković, Đorđe Andrejević Kun received a scholarship and studied from 1926 to 1928 in Italy and from 1928 to 1929 in France. In 1931 he received the first prize for his design of the coat of arms of the city of Belgrade, which still bears the city today. In addition, his works were exhibited in Belgrade, Zagreb and Novi Sad in 1931 and 1932 .

In 1934 Đorđe Andrejević Kun was one of the founding members of the Život artist group and toured Moscow, where he familiarized himself with Socialist Realism . Following this trend, he published a series of woodcuts entitled Blood Soaked Gold (Krvavo zlato) in 1937.

Andrejević Kun joined the International Brigades and fought in the Spanish Civil War . During this time, in 1939, he published his series of woodcuts called For Freedom (Za slobodu). In 1940 he published the collection of sketches, drawings, studies (Skice, crteži, studije) in Spain.

From 1941 to 1945 he was a member of the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army . In 1943 Đorđe Andrejević Kun designed the coat of arms of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia .

From 1945 Đorđe Andrejević Kun was Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and from 1959 to 1963 Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Belgrade. In 1946 he received the graphics prize of the Yugoslav Federation for Partisans (Partizani), a series of drawings. In 1949 he received the National Prize for Painting, for Victims of Horror (Svedoci užasa). He also became a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1950 and a full member in 1958. From 1957 to 1960 Andrejević Kun was President of the Association of Artists of the Yugoslav Federation.

His works were exhibited in Belgrade, Kragujevac , Čačak , Niš , Skopje , Zemun , Sombor and in 1963 in Berlin .

Djordje Andrejević Kun died on January 17, 1964 in Belgrade.

Đorđe Andrejević Kun's work includes over 300 paintings, including both monumental and smaller ones. More than 60 are exhibited in museums in the former Yugoslavia and abroad, about the same number belong to state institutions, the rest are in private collections. In addition, over 1000 drawings are part of his work. There are also three large mosaics by Andrejević Kun, one on the war memorial in Ivanjica , one on the facade of a public building in Kragujevac and one in the Holocaust Museum in Paris.
