Andrew Wyndham Phillips, Baron Phillips of Sudbury , OBE (born March 15, 1939 ) is a British solicitor and politician for the Liberal Democrats .

life and career

Phillips attended Culford State School and studied law and economics at Trinity Hall , Cambridge . He then became a solicitor and opened a commercial law firm Bates, Wells & Braithwaite in 1970 , of which he is still a partner today.

From 1976 to 2002 he appeared on the radio program of BBC Radio 2 and gave advice on legal issues on the popular Jimmy Young Show . He was also a guest on other radio and television shows such as Any Questions? and Newsnight .

In 1996 he was inducted into the Order of the British Empire as an officer . In 1998, Phillips was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Phillips of Sudbury , of Sudbury in the County of Suffolk . He received a seat in the House of Lords , which he took on the side of the Liberal Democrats . In parliament he spoke on issues of civil liberty. He was the spokesman for the Liberal Democrats in their efforts to prevent British ID cards and counter-terrorism legislation.

Phillips was appointed Chancellor of the University of Essex on April 28, 2003 , succeeding Lord Nolan , who resigned on December 31, 2002 in office.

In July 2006, he announced his resignation from the British House of Lords and his seat would be transferred to a successor from his party. However, since this is not possible, he took a leave of absence . The Leave of Absence ended in 2009, since then Lord Phillips has been regularly in the House of Lords and speaks on various topics.

On May 7, 2015, he voluntarily retired under the rules of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014 and left the House of Lords.

Andrew Phillips has been married to Penelope Ann Bennett since 1968 and the couple have one son and two daughters.
