Andrew Scheer (born May 20, 1979 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian politician of the Conservative Party , whose chairman he has been since May 27, 2017 .

Life

Scheer studied politics and history at the University of Ottawa . Since 2004 he has been a member of the Canadian lower house. Scheer was from June 2, 2011 to December 3, 2015 as the successor to Peter Milliken, the Speaker of Parliament in the Canadian House of Commons . Scheer is married and has five children. He lives with his family in Regina , Saskatchewan .

Scheer was banned from entering Russia by the Russian government as a result of the Crimean crisis .

Scheer is one of the economically liberal wing of his party. He strives for a balanced budget. He announced several times that he wanted to abolish the CO2 tax in order to reduce the tax burden for citizens and companies. He was initially critical of the Paris climate protection agreement , but changed his mind from 2017.

On the refugee issue, Canada should focus primarily on welcoming those who are most at risk, including a. religious minorities in the Middle East such as Christians or those at risk of death due to apostasy from Islam .

He announced that he would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in the event of an election victory .
