Andrew Thomas (composer)
Andrew William Thomas (born October 8, 1939 in Ithaca , New York ) is an American composer , pianist and conductor .
Life
Thomas studied with Karel Husa at Cornell University , with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and composition with Luciano Berio , Elliott Carter and Otto Luening at the Juilliard School . From 1969 to 1994 he was a professor at the Juilliard School in New York. From 2000 he was a permanent guest in China. Many orchestras and chamber music ensembles performed his works, so in 1997 the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin played its Marimba Concerto under Vladimir Aschkenasi . He has received several awards including a. from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Distinguished Teacher Citation of the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars.
