Andrew Welsh (born April 19, 1944 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party (SNP). Welsh attended Govan High School in Glasgow and then earned Masters degrees in History and Modern History and a Diploma in Education from the University of Stirling . He then worked as a history teacher in Stirling until his election to the British House of Commons . Between 1979 and 1984 Welsh worked as a lecturer in economics and administration at Dundee College and then until 1987 at Angus College in Arbroath . He was also Provost of Angus between 1984 and 1987 .

British House of Commons

After Welsh had already been elected to the Stirling Region Council in 1974 , he ran for the first time at the national level in the general election in October 1974 . He won the direct mandate of the Angus South constituency before the conservative jock Bruce-Gardyne and moved into the House of Commons for the first time . In the following general election in 1979 he lost his mandate to the conservative Peter Fraser . In the course of the constituency reform, the constituency of Angus South was abolished at the end of the legislative period and Welsh applied for the direct mandate of the constituency of East Angus in the 1983 general election , which he was only able to win in the 1987 general election. In 1992 he defended his mandate and, after the electoral district was dissolved at the end of the legislative period, he stood in the 1997 general election for the newly created Angus constituency and won the direct mandate. At the end of the legislature, Welsh resigned from the House of Commons.

Scottish Parliament

In the first Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999, Welsh ran in the constituency of Angus and won the direct mandate by a clear margin. He defended his mandate in the parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007 and left parliament at the end of the legislative period.
