Andrij Witalijowytsch Shevchenko ( Ukrainian Андрій Віталійович Шевченко ; born June 10, 1976 in Hwisdez , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian journalist, politician and diplomat . He has been Ukraine's ambassador to Canada since July 19, 2019 .

Life

Shevchenko was born in the urban-type settlement Hwisdez in the Ukrainian Oblast Ivano-Frankivsk as the son of journalist, writer and politician Vitaly Shevchenko. He graduated from high school in Kiev , began his journalistic career in 1993 and graduated from Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev in 1999 .

Shevchenko worked in the 1990s as a correspondent in Kiev for the Edmonton- based newspaper "The Ukrainian News". He was a co-founder of the Ukrainian 5th Channel, the first 24-hour news channel in Ukraine, and one of the leaders of the journalists' movement against censorship. In addition, from 2002 he was the first chairman of the Kiev Independent Media Association. He became known to a wide audience in 2004 as a reporter for the Orange Revolution . In 2005 he received the Press Freedom Prize from Reporters Without Borders (Vienna). He then became a member of the Verkhovna Rada . During the Euromaidan he took an active part in the protests against the Ukrainian government. On September 24, 2015, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Canada by the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko , and on September 8, 2017, he was also appointed representative of Ukraine to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Shevchenko is married to the journalist and television presenter Hanna Homonaj and has two daughters.
