Andromakhe is a genus of freshwater fish from the family of the true tetras (Characidae) that occurs in northern Argentina, southern Brazil and Uruguay . It was only newly introduced in April 2020. The Andromakhe species previously belonged to the polyphyletic genus Astyanax . The genus Andromakhe was by Andromache named, in Greek mythology, the wife of the Trojan hero Hector and in the Iliad of Homer , the mother of Astyanax .
features
Andromakhe species are 4.4 to 9.2 cm long and have a laterally flattened, elongated and slightly high-backed body. They differ from other genera of the subfamily Stethaprioninae , among other things, by a combination of the following features: There are no circuli (concentric growth rings) in the rear area of the scales. The rhinosphenoid (a special cranial bone of some tetra) does not have a rearward-facing process that runs between the olfactory nerves. The attachment of the anal fin lies in front of a vertical line through the last ray of the dorsal fin. There are two to four teeth on the maxillary and two rows of teeth on the premaxillary . The sideline is complete. The caudal fin is scaly. In addition, the monophyly of the genus is supported by 17 molecular synapomorphies .
species
There are five types of Andromakhe :
- Andromakhe latens (Mirande, Aguilera & Azpelicueta, 2004), type species
- Andromakhe paris (Azpelicueta, Almirón & Casciotta, 2002)
- Andromakhe saguazu (Casciotta, Almirón & Azpelicueta, 2003)
- Andromakhe stenohalinus (Messner, 1962)
- Andromakhe tupi (Azpelicueta et al., 2003)
