Andronikos Asanes
Andronikos Asanes († around 1355) was the second son of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Assen III, who fled to Constantinople . and his wife Irene Palaiologina, a daughter of the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII. Dukas Komnenos Palaiologos .
Andronikos was one of the important representatives of the Byzantine branch of the Bulgarian noble family Assen . He first gained political influence as governor (Epitropos) of the Byzantine part of the Morea (approx. 1316 to 1322), where he succeeded in expanding the Byzantine position in the battle with the Franks and the Catalans . In the subsequent inner-Byzantine power struggles, he supported Johannes Kantakuzenos , whose father-in-law he had been since 1320.
