Androniqi Zengo Antoniu

Androniqi Zengo Antoniu (born May 26, 1913 in Korça , † February 10, 2000 ) was an Albanian painter . Together with her sister Sofia , she is considered the first professional painter in Albania.

life and work

Androniqi Zengo Antoniu was the daughter of the icon painter Vangjel Zengo from Dardha , whom she supported for years. She has painted several churches in her hometown of Korça, in Tirana and other places in Albania. She graduated with honors from the Athens School of Fine Arts in painting and sculpture . After studying in Paris , she returned to Albania to teach at the Pedagogical Institute “Nëna Mbretëreshë” . She is said to have had an affair with Lasgush Poradeci in the late 1930s . In 1941 she married the singer Kristaq Antoniu . She mainly painted portraits , landscapes and icons , like her sister strongly influenced by realism .

Androniqi Zengo had at least three solo exhibitions during his lifetime, including one in 1937 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the founding of Albania. She also took part in various group exhibitions, for example in New York in 1939. Zengo left over 500 works. 55 of her works are in the collection of the Galeria Kombëtare e Arteve in Tirana. In 2017, works by Androniqi Zengo Antoniu were presented posthumously at documenta 14 .
