Andrzej Urbańczyk (born March 1, 1936 in Warsaw ) is a Polish sailor and author.

Life

Urbańczyk started sailing in 1957 at the age of 21. Inspired by Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki expedition, he started a raft trip with the Nord raft across the Baltic Sea . He has lived in the USA since 1972 .

In 1975 he sailed with the yacht Nord II from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Barbados across the Atlantic . In 1977 he sailed as a solo sailor with Nord III from Los Angeles to San Francisco . This was followed in 1978 solo trips across the Pacific from San Francisco via Hawaii to Yokohama and from Yokohama back to San Francisco without stopping, again with the Nord III . In the same year he went with the schooner Morning Star from San Francisco via Hawaii and Samoa to Sydney . In 1982 he was once again alone, sailors, this time with the North IV on the route from San Francisco to Hawaii and back on the road, this journey he repeated in 1989 as a non-single sailor with the North V . In 1984 he then undertook a circumnavigation of the world alone with the Nord IV , calling at only three ports.

In 1989 he started the attempt with the Nord V to circumnavigate the world as a single sailor in just one hundred days, which he did not succeed. A second attempt followed in 1991. In 1992 he single-handedly followed the possible route of Slavs on the Pacific with the Nord IV . In 1995 he sailed with the Słoń Morski in the waters of the Antarctic . In 2002 he started from San Francisco on a raft across the Pacific.

In total, he was at sea alone for 750 days and covered 75,000 nautical miles . He has written 36 books and more than 250 press articles. Urbańczyk has received various awards, including from Equatorial Challenger and Slocum Society Honors .
