Andy Secrest (* 2. August 1907 in Muncie (Indiana) , † 31 August 1977 in California ) was an American jazz - trumpet and cornet .

Andy Secrest began his music career in 1925 in the state of Indiana . In 1927 he took part in the " Stardust " session of the Emil Seidel Orchestra and Hoagy Carmichael for the Gennett Records label . He then became a member of the Jean Goldkette Orchestra in Detroit , with whom he recorded a few records and played both trumpet and cornet. On Goldkette's recommendation, he played in the place of Bix Beiderbecke in the Paul Whiteman Orchestra when the trumpeter had to sit out due to alcoholism in February 1929. When Bix Beiderbecke returned to the group, they both played together in the Whiteman Band and in a smaller ensemble led by Frankie Trumbauer . Secrest was considered a solid soloist in the middle registers and a good ensemble player. He left the Whiteman Band in 1932, played in Ted Weems' orchestra and then worked in California, where he worked as a studio musician in Hollywood in records, radio and film productions until the 1950s, including for Victor Young . Then he left the music business and worked as a real estate agent. Over the course of his career, he has also worked on recordings with Mildred Bailey , Bing Crosby , Anita O'Day and Joe Venuti .
