Angel Bat Dawid (* 1980 in Chicago as Angel Elmore ) is an American jazz musician ( clarinet , vocals , composition ).

Live and act

Dawid had been taking piano lessons from the age of twelve and wanted to be a musician. Due to circumstances, she initially worked as a saleswoman until she left in 2014 to devote herself to music. She focused on singing, playing the clarinet and piano, and composing. She soon attended saxophonist David Boykin's free jazz sessions and formed her Participatory Music Coalition with like-minded musicians. Her stage name "Bat Dawid" (Hebrew for "Daughter of David") alludes to the spiritual dimension of her music. In addition, she increasingly worked in the ensembles of Ben LaMar Gay , Damon Locks , Jaimie Branch and Matthew Lux ; In 2018 she also performed in a duo with Roscoe Mitchell .

In 2019 the jazz label International Anthem released her solo album The Oracle , on which she also performed her own pieces. The album received very good reviews. In autumn 2019 she toured Europe. She can also be heard on albums by Rob Mazurek , Makaya McCraven , Tim Daisy , Damon Lock's Black Monument Ensemble and I luma by A. Billi Free. In 2019 she was recognized by the Critics Poll of the JazzTimes magazine in the New Artist category.
