Angelita Maria Francisca Pires (* 1969 (uncertain) in Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese . She ran as an independent candidate in the 2012 East Timor presidential election . She was supported by the UNDERTIM party .

Life

Pires grew up in Darwin , Australia , but returned to East Timor in the early 1990s. Her family stayed in Darwin. She never completed her law degree, which she began in Australia. During the Indonesian imprisonment of the future Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão , Pires visited him in prison in Jakarta . She is said to have been a competitor of his later wife Kirsty Sword Gusmão for the attention of the FALINTIL boss.

Pires became known as the public spokeswoman and lover of the East Timorese rebel leader Alfredo Reinado , who was killed in the attack on President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão on February 11, 2008 . During the 17 months that Reinado and his followers hid in the wilderness of East Timor, she had visited him several times and also negotiated with the security forces. Pires was arrested on February 18 as an alleged accomplice. She is said to have given Reinado shelter before the attack. After interrogation, Pires was released and placed under house arrest. She had stated that she had only had lunch with Reinado the day before. She would have known nothing of his further plans. Reinado's men saw Pires as an ambitious woman who wanted to be as close to power as possible. According to testimony of captured rebels and the widow of a rebel who also died in the attempted assassination, she is said to have sent Reinado to Ramos-Horta's house. The widow said her husband had said the night before that Pires had arranged a meeting with the president. Pires confirmed in a statement that Reinado had been with her the night before the attack. $ 30,000 was discovered on Reinado's body, believed to have been obtained from Pires. She denied this, but at the end of April Pires found $ 800,000 in an account at Darwin Commonwealth Bank, Australia , and another $ 200,000 had already been withdrawn.

On March 3, 2009, Angelita Pires and 27 others were charged in connection with the attack. Pires was considered to be the initiator of the attack. She was accused of giving Reinado marijuana the day before to make him fearless. The public prosecutor initially demanded three years' imprisonment for her, later 20 years. Pires pleaded not guilty. The verdicts were passed on March 3, 2010. Angelita Pires and three other people were acquitted. 24 defendants received prison terms. After her release, Pires spent the following year in Darwin.

In June 2011, Pires announced in Dili that she would run in the upcoming 2012 presidential election and found a party. The official declaration came on January 26, 2012. Pires was eliminated in the first round of elections on March 17, 2012 in last place with 0.37% of the vote. On July 7, she entered the UNDERTIM list in the 2012 parliamentary elections .

Others

In addition to her East Timorese, Pires is also an Australian citizen.

Pires was pregnant by him when Reinado died, but lost the child. She is now married to Darwin attorney Jon Tippett, who led the defense of Pires in the February 11, 2008 assassination trial.
