The Angoor Ada Raid was a military operation carried out by the special forces of the United States Army on September 3, 2008 against fighters of the Taliban . The attack took place in the village of Moosi in the Angoor Ada region of southern Waziristan , Pakistan , very close to the border with Afghanistan . Around the same time, the Pakistani Armed Forces ended a four-week offensive in Bajaur , the northernmost of the federally administered tribal areas , of which South Waziristan is the southernmost. The cessation of the fighting enabled about half a million internally displaced persons to return to their homeland. The operation began at 3:00 a.m. local time. Although the United States had previously launched isolated rocket attacks on targets in Pakistan, that attack was the first known occasion on which US soldiers attacked Taliban fighters on the ground inside Pakistan. According to press reports, twenty people were killed in the military action, including three women and four children, but it is not clear whether and how many of them were actually civilians . The American side stated that the women killed had helped the militants. Three helicopters with forty US soldiers on board were involved in the attack, but only one of them dropped soldiers, the other two remained in the air. Air support was also provided by two military jets. The US units attacked three houses and stayed in the village for a total of about half an hour. The militants were apparently asleep when the attack took place, none of them reportedly being a senior Taliban member. A US military spokesman announced that several militants had been captured and a few more killed.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmud Qureshi said in response to the military action before the Pakistani National Assembly, "There is no high quality target or known terrorist among the dead [...] Only innocent civilians, including women and children, were targeted."

United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice did not provide details, but stated that the United States appears to be working very closely with the civilian government [in Pakistan] . The Pakistani government issued a statement stating that it had protested sharply to the US government against the incident and that such acts of aggression would not serve the common cause of combating terrorism and militancy in the area . The United States Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne W. Patterson , was summoned to the State Department where she was presented with a protest note.
