Anita Ratschwelischwili ( Georgian ანიტა რაჭველიშვილი ; international spelling: Anita Rachvelishvili ; * 1984 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian opera singer specializing in mezzo-soprano .

Education and career

Ratschwelischwili was trained as a pianist and then studied singing at the Tbilisi Conservatory . While still a student, she made her debut at the Tbilisi State Theater as Maddalena in Rigoletto . She continued her education at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala in Milan and was selected in 2009 by the then music director of the Teatro alla Scala , Daniel Barenboim , for the title role in the new production of Carmen . This production with the tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Don José was broadcast internationally on television and brought Ratschwelischwili international attention. She was praised for her strong voice and impressive stage presence and has since performed the role of Carmen at leading opera houses such as the Royal Opera in London , the Canadian Opera , the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Other roles at large houses were Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridice , Dalila in Samson et Dalila , Dulcinée in Don Quichotte and Končakovna in Prince Igor .

In 2016 Ratschwelischwili appeared as Amneris in a performance of Aida at the Paris Opera . She can be seen in DVD releases by Orfeo ed Euridice and Prince Igor .
