Anja Hazekamp (born January 21, 1968 in Vlagtwedde ) is a Dutch biologist and politician of the Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD). Hazekamp has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2014 European elections and defended her mandate in the 2019 election . She is a member of the GUE / NGL group .

Life

education

Anja Hazekamp was born on January 21, 1968 in Vglatwedde, she grew up in Ter Apel, where she also completed her school education. In 1988/89 she first studied biology to become a teacher in Leeurwarden, then moved to the University of Groningen , where she studied biology until 1995.

Hazekamp worked from 1992 to 1997 as a public relations officer for the Dutch Society for Animal Welfare. From 1995 to 1997 she also worked as a research assistant for two fauna-related organizations. From 1997 to 2000 she worked at the University of Utrecht and the University of Leiden as a research assistant on the subject of animal experiments. In 2000 she returned to the Dutch Society for Animal Welfare and worked in animal welfare policy for five years. She then worked at the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Center until 2009 , then again until 2014 in the animal welfare policy area at the AAP Foundation.

Political commitment

She was politically active at GroenLinks until 2007, when she switched to the Partij voor de Dieren.

In 2007 Hazekamp became a member of the Provinciale Staten of Groningen. In the 2009 European elections she ran for third place in the PvdD's list, as well as in the 2010 House of Commons elections. Both times they missed entry. On January 24, 2012, Hazekamp became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General as parental leave replacement for Marianne Thieme . This membership ended on May 12, 2012.

Entry into the European Parliament

In the elections to the European Parliament in 2014 , the PvdD nominated Hazekamp for first place on the list. The party won 4.21 percent and thus one of the 26 Dutch seats, so Hazekamp moved in. She gave up her mandate in the Provinciale Staten of Groningen. In the European Parliament, Hazekamp joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left , from 2015 to 2019 she was a member of the group's executive committee.

For her group, Hazekamp was a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the special committee for the EU's approval procedure for pesticides in the eighth electoral term (2014-2019) . She was also a deputy member of the Committee on Fisheries , the Committee on Petitions (2014–2017) and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (2017–2019).

In the 2019 European elections , the PvdD nominated her again for first place on the list. She was able to defend the mandate with 4.02 percent of the vote. In the ninth legislature (2019-2024) she rejoined the GUE / NGL parliamentary group. For her group, Hazekamp is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, of which she was elected Vice-Chair. She is also a deputy member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the Fisheries Committee.
