Anja Snellman , née Kauranen (born May 23, 1954 in Helsinki , Finland ) is a Finnish writer , screenwriter , television presenter and journalist . Since her marriage to the journalist Saska Saarikoski , she has had the family name Snellman, previously she was known by her maiden name Anja Kauranen .

Life

Anja Snellman was born as Anja Kauranen in Kallio , a district of Helsinki. She attended the Aleksis Kiven koulu and the Alppilan lukio . From 1973 to 1981 she studied English Philology, Applied Psychology and Finnish Literature at the University of Helsinki . After she and Esa Saarinen heavily criticized Finnish literature in the student magazine Ylioppilaslehti in 1980 , she published her first novel with Sonja O. kävi taällä only a year later . The book was her big break. It was awarded the J. H. Erkon Prize for the best debut novel that same year, and the book sold itself over 100,000 copies and has been translated into several languages, including English.

Since then, Snellman has published over 20 novels and two collections of poetry, including the Pro Finlandia in 2007 and the Thank you-for-the-book medal in 1994 for her novel Ihon aika . This book is one of four novels that have been translated into the German language. After a translation by Angelika Plöger , the book was published in 2001 by Goldmann Verlag in Munich under the German title Zeit der Haut . Plöger also translated Pelon maantiede , which was also published by Goldmann in 2001, under the title Geographie der Angst . Published by btb Verlag, also translated by Plöger, Paratiisin kartta as a map of paradise and Safari Club as a safari club . Her books have been translated into over 20 languages ​​in total.

Snellman made her debut as a screenwriter in 1985 with the adaptation of the novel Suuri illusioni by Mika Waltari for the love drama of the same name directed by Tuija-Maija Niskanen . She also worked as a screenwriter for the two television films Rotta kotona and Palkinto in 1987 and 1988. After all, it was Niskanen who brought Snellman's first book to the screen in 1999 with the film adaptation of the novel Ihon Aika . The second film adaptation of the novel followed a year later with Pelon maantiede , after a production by Auli Mantila , which was broadcast as an accomplice on June 18, 2001 on Arte out of fear .

In parallel to her literary work, Snellman is also active as a journalist and television presenter. She wrote several articles and columns for magazines such as KaksPlussaan , Suomen Kuvalehteen , Fittnessiin , Annaan and Veikkaajaan . She came into contact with television work as early as the late 1990s, with the television program Aamu-TV . Together with Lauri Karhuvaaran , she presented the Huomenta Suomi magazine on MTV3 Thursday morning . Since autumn 2010 she has worked with Anja Snellman: Saanko esitellä? a Monday evening talk show on SuomiTV . From 2001 to 2006 she was chair of the program committee of the Helsinki Book Fair and from 2007 to 2009 artistic director of the Vaasa literature festival .

Snellman was married to journalist Saska Saarikoski from 1997 . Both have two daughters together. She took the surname Snellman during the marriage and did not drop it after the divorce. She is currently married to guitarist Jukka Orma .

For writing, Snellman often retired to her home in Chania , Crete during the 1990s . Most recently she wrote most of the books in Bangalore .
