Anna Theodora Bernardina "Ank" Bijleveld-Schouten (born March 17, 1962 in IJsselmuiden ) is a Dutch politician from the Christian Democratisch Appèl (CDA). She was the Dutch Minister of Defense in the Rutte III cabinet from October 26, 2017 to September 17, 2021 .

Life

From February 22, 2007 to October 14, 2010 she was State Secretary for Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations in the Balkenende IV cabinet and from June 17, 2010 to December 31, 2010 (as from 1989 to 2001) she was also a member of the Second Chamber of the States General . From 2001 to 2007 she was mayor of Hof van Twente , a municipality founded in 2001 in the province of Overijssel .

From January 1, 2011 to October 26, 2017, Bijleveld-Schouten was the king's commissioner in the province of Overijssel, succeeding party comrade Geert Jansen .

On October 26, 2017, she was appointed Minister of Defense in the Rutte III cabinet. On September 17, 2021, she resigned following a motion in parliament for disapproval of the chaotic evacuation mission in Afghanistan.

Bijleveld studied administrative science at the University of Twente . She is married with two daughters and is a member of the Roman Catholic Church . She lives in Goor , a place in the municipality of Hof van Twente.
