biography

Cynthia Coleman was born in Newark on January 29, 1934, some sources state January 24, 1934. Her father Wallace and his brothers formed the gospel singing group "The Coleman Brothers". In 1949, Cynthia formed her own singing group "The Colemanairies," which included Joe Walker, Sam Walker and Wesley Johnson. They performed throughout the US and released some gospel records in 1953-54.

In 1954 she used the pseudonym Ann Cole for the first time. She performed in bars in New York and New Jersey where one day Sol Rabinowitz noticed her. He won her for his record label Baton Records, on which she had some minor hits from 1956-57.

In 1956 she was on tour with Muddy Waters. During her appearances, she performed the title Got My Mo-Jo Working , written by Preston Foster. In January 1957 she recorded the piece for Baton Records. Muddy Waters had meanwhile recorded his own version of the song for Chess Records , where he was also named as a songwriter . Both versions came out in the same week. A lawsuit established that Foster wrote the song.

Ann Cole continued to record for various labels. In late 1960, she recorded the song Gee Baby with Joe Joseph as Joe & Ann . It reached number 14 on the R&B charts and hit the pop charts in the version of Mickey & Sylvia . She had her last solo hit in 1962 with Have Fun , whose B-side Don't Stop the Wedding brought her to the pop charts (99th place). Ann Cole died in November 1986 at the age of 52.
