Anna Boschek (born May 14, 1874 in Vienna ; † November 19, 1957 ibid) was an Austrian politician of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP).

After the death of her father, a railway fitter, Anna Boschek had to drop out of school at the age of 9 and start working. Among other things, she worked as a homeworker, had jobs in a bead blowing workshop in an electroplating workshop and in a harmonica factory . She broke off her apprenticeship in a Chinese silver factory due to a severe eye condition . Later she also worked as a factory worker. In 1891 she was a winder in the Ottakringer jersey factory. From 1894 she was a union employee.

Private

Anna Boschek's guardian until she came of age, but also her political mentor , was Anton Hueber , the chairman and secretary of the Austrian trade union commission. She remained single until her death.

Political functions

Among other things, from 1890 she was the first woman on the party executive committee of the SDAP, was a member of the textile workers 'union in 1891 and joined the social democratic workers' education association. She was chairwoman of the women's section in the Federation of Free Trade Unions and was a member of the Vienna City Council from 1918 to 1920 . From March 4, 1919 to November 9, 1920 she was a member of the Constituent National Assembly and from November 10, 1920 to February 17, 1934 she was a member of the National Council .

Anna Boschek was arrested on February 17, 1934 and spent seven weeks in the police prison on the Elisabethpromenade (today: Rossauer Lände). After she was released, she was under police supervision. She resigned from her political functions in 1945 for health reasons, but remained active in a section of the SPÖ in the 15th Viennese district of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus . She made her last appearance at the International Socialist Women's Conference in Vienna in 1957.

Other functions

She was a member of the management of the social democratic workers' education association, manager of the Reich Women's Committee and in 1919 also a member of the women's commission of the International Labor Office.

Honors

The “ Anna Boschek Apprentice Girls Home ” at Plößlgasse 2 / Prinz-Eugen-Strasse 20-22 , built between 1957 and 1959, was named after Anna Boschek . The building was demolished in 2007 as part of the renovation of the Chamber of Labor . In 2009 an urban residential complex at Davidgasse 78, which was built between 1953 and 1956, was named Anna-Boschek-Hof . In 2017 the Anna-Boschek-Platz in Floridsdorf was named after her.

A small collection can be found in the Vienna Library , another is held by the Association for the History of the Workers' Movement.
