Anna von Palandt (* between 1508 and 1516; † 1585) was a noblewoman from the Lower Rhine from the influential Palandt family . Together with her second husband Rütger von der Horst , she was the builder of the Horst Castle in what is now the Horst district of Gelsenkirchen . She not only stood by her husband with advice and action, but also supported the financing of the expensive construction project with her own funds.

Life

Anna came from the influential Palandt family, which was widely branched out in the Rhineland . Her mother was Elisabeth von der Horst , daughter and wealthy heiress of the Klevian Hereditary Marshal Wilhelm von der Horst and his wife Belia von Loë , who resided at Haus Horst in what is now the Mönchengladbach district of Giesenkirchen . Anna's father was Elbert von Palandt zu Zelhem und Issum , who was to take over the marshal's office from his late father-in-law in 1533. There is no reliable information about her date of birth, so that her year of birth can only be inferred from the time of her parents' marriage in 1507 and her first marriage in 1532: She was therefore born between 1508 and 1516. Nothing is known about her childhood and youth either, but the assumption is justified that - as was common with aristocratic girls at the time - she and her two brothers Werner and Johann were taught reading and writing by a private tutor.

Anna married Heinrich von Wylich in 1532. The marriage contract signed by the two of them on March 4th of that year set their dowry at 4,500  Rhenish gold guilders . In return, the bride had to forego the parental inheritance as well as the expected stately inheritance of her grandmother Belia. As body breeding , she was awarded goods in Rosau and Aspel near Rees, among others . In her ten-year marriage to Heinrich, Anna gave birth to five children between 1533 and 1542: Johann, Wilhelm, Gertrud, Sybilla and Henrica (also Hendrina).

After her husband Heinrich von Wylich died in 1541/1542 and her father Elbert probably also died in 1543, Anna entered into a second marriage between 1547 and 1549 with Rütger von der Horst, who later became Marshal of the Electorate of Cologne , who had his seat at Castle Horst in Emschertal had. The wedding probably took place with the express approval of her mother, because in her will she gave generous sums of money to both her second son-in-law and her grandson from this marriage. Anna brought at least one of her children from her first marriage with her to her new domicile, where she had great influence from then on. It is probably thanks to her influence that her second husband decided to replace the castle complex that burned down in 1554 with a comprehensive new building in the Renaissance style . Apparently Rütger used part of the money inherited from his mother-in-law Elisabeth, who died in the same year, which brought the couple a solid wealth. This is also indicated by a picture of Anna von Palandt from around 1553, which is part of a married portrait and depicts her in elegant clothes and with valuable jewelry.

But not only the inherited fortune from Anna's mother flowed into Rütger's construction activities, Anna also supported the construction of the castle very strongly with her own financial resources. This emerges from the so-called construction diaries of her husband, which Rütger von der Horst kept from 1554 to 1573 and in which he meticulously documented every payment of craftsmen, suppliers and day laborers by his wife. Accordingly, Anna von Palandt acted independently and authorized on the castle construction site and was directly involved in the construction. However, the couple could not enjoy their new castle for long. Only four years after the work was completed in 1578, the client passed away, his wife only survived him by three years and died in 1585.

Anna's second marriage had two children: Her firstborn Johann died in the summer of 1570. His younger sister Margarethe (* between 1552 and 1554; † 1625) married in 1575 Betram von Loë (* 1542; † 1611), who was new after Anna's death The owner of Schloss Horst became.
