Anna of Savoy
Princess Anna of Savoy (* around 1306; † 1365 in Constantinople ) was Empress of Byzantium by marriage and regent from 1341 to 1347.
Life
Anna, whose baptismal name was Johanna , was the daughter of Count Amadeus V the Great of Savoy (1252-1323) and his second wife Princess Maria of Brabant (1278-1338), daughter of Duke John I the Victorious of Brabant-Limburg and Princess Margaret of Flanders-Namur of the Dampierre family. She was the niece of the Roman-German queen , Margaret of Brabant , and the cousin of the French queen Maria of Luxembourg ; as well as the sister-in-law of Duke Leopold I of Austria and Styria .
In 1326 Princess Johanna married the later Byzantine emperor Andronikos III in Constantinople . Palaiologos (1296-1341). In doing so, she changed her name to Anna. The marriage, which all reports said was a happy one, had four children:
- Irene (1327-1356) ∞ Michael Asen IV. Of Bulgaria (1322-1355)
- Johannes V. Palaiologos (1332-1391) ∞ Princess Helena Kantakuzene of Byzantium (1333-1396)
- Michael Palaiologos (1337-1370)
- Maria († 1401) ∞ Francesco I. Gattilusio (1330–1384), patrician from Genoa and regent of Lesbos
After the death of her husband, she took over the reign of her son. Around 1346 the regent took the defense of St. Gregorios Palamas , which contributed decisively to the recognition of his religious doctrine in 1351. In 1351 Empress Anna withdrew to Salonika and died as sister Anastasia in the monastery.
