Maria of Luxembourg (* 1304 ; † March 26, 1324 in Issoudun ) was Queen of France through marriage to Charles IV .

Life

Maria was born in 1304 as the daughter of the later Roman-German Emperor Henry VII and his wife Margaret of Brabant . She was also the sister of the Bohemian King John of Bohemia . She married the French King Charles IV in Provins on September 21, 1322 and became his second wife after Charles' first marriage to Blanka of Burgundy on May 19, 1322 by Pope John XXII. had been canceled. This second marriage of the third and youngest son of Philip IV , who only came to power at the beginning of 1322, was intended to strengthen the alliances of the Capetians in eastern France.

In 1323 Maria gave birth to a daughter, Marguérite. She was pregnant again when she had an accident with her horse-drawn carriage on the exhausting drive back from a stay with the royal family in Toulouse . She was brought to Issoudun but suffered a premature birth; her son Louis lived only a few hours. Maria succumbed to the injuries caused by the fall and died on March 26, 1324 at the age of only 19 years. She was buried in the Dominican church in Montargis .
