The winery Annandale Wines is located near the town of Stellenbosch , community Stellenbosch , in the province of Western Cape in South Africa . The cultivation takes place on slopes on the western and southern side of the Helderberg, at heights of 100 to 170 m above sea level, on an area of ​​around 45  hectares .

history

Wine has been grown here for over 300 years. The history of the winery goes back to 1688, when Simon van der Stel approved the establishment of the farm by Jan Wismaar; the original farm name was Brakelsdal. Annandale is the oldest farm in the Helderberg Valley, the main house and wine cellar were built in the mid-1700s. After the Second World War , part of the property became a home for battered horses and part of a riding school for a few years; The reference to this is still made today through the wine bottle labels, which depict a horse's head.

Cultivated grape varieties

At the beginning of the 20th century, around 100 hectares of wine were grown. After Gerhard (Hempies) du Toit acquired the estate in 1996, the focus was on top-quality red wines. Current acreage:

climate

In winter the temperatures are between 4 ° C (night) and maximum daytime temperatures of 15 ° C. In summer these temperatures fluctuate between 19 and 36 ° C. The average rainfall is 750 mm per year, which means that normally no additional irrigation is necessary.
