Anne Bradstreet (born around 1612 in Northampton , England ; died September 16, 1672 in Andover , Massachusetts ) was the first English-language poet whose works were published in the colonies of the New World.

life and work

She came to New England in 1630 with the John Winthrop fleet . Her father was Thomas Dudley , who later became multiple times Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony . At the age of 16 she married Simon Bradstreet , who also became governor (1679–1686 and 1689–1692) of the colony after her death. First they lived in Ipswich (Massachusetts) , later in Andover. Anne Bradstreet was the mother of eight children.

Bradstreet mainly wrote religious poetry that reflected the Puritan beliefs of her time, but also poems about the joys of married life and motherhood. Her best known poem is probably the Ode To My Dear and Loving Husband . She also wrote a series of quaternions , poems that deal with the four seasons, the four elements, and so on. The French poet Guillaume du Bartas and the English writers Edmund Spenser and Sir Philip Sidney could be named as role models for their literary work .

In 1650 some of her poems under the title The Tenth Muse Lately Jump Up in America were published in London, apparently without her consent. Further poems were published posthumously in 1678 under the title Several Poems Compiled with Great Variety of Wit and Learning , others not until 1867.

She found her final resting place at Old Burying Point in Salem (Massachusetts) .
