She graduated from high school at Drew School and then studied at Goucher College . There she wrote for the school newspaper, but dropped out after two years.

In 1980 she published her first novel Hard Laughter . She dedicated the book to her father, who had a brain tumor.

Anne Lamott dealt with the birth of her son Sam in 1989 and the time as a single mother in her book Operating Instructions . This was later followed by the book Some Assembly Required , which was written under the impression of having become a grandmother.

By addressing their difficulties in life and their own failure, it offers the reader the opportunity to compare their own experiences with them. This also gives her the "honorary title"  The People's Author .

Lamott is politically active on the left and advocates women's rights , equal rights for LGBT people and environmental policy .

In 1999 Freida Lee Mock published a biographical documentary entitled Bird by Bird with Annie: A Film Portrait of Writer Anne Lamott.
