from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anne of York (born November 2, 1475 in the Palace of Westminster , London , † November 23, 1511 ) was an English princess and fifth daughter of King Edward IV and his wife Elizabeth Woodville .

engagement

On August 5, 1480, Edward IV signed a treaty with Maximilian I , Archduke of Austria and later Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire . According to this contract, Anne Maximilian's eldest son, Philipp, was to marry. Maximilian was a valuable ally for Eduard, as he had good prospects for the imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empire and his wife Maria was the sole heir to the Duke of Burgundy. After the death of Edward, however, the marriage contract was discarded.

marriage

To the vicinity of King Richard III. Confirming to the Howard family , Anne was betrothed to Thomas Howard in 1484 . After Richard's death, Howard renewed his claim to Anne. At that time she was a lady in waiting for her sister Elizabeth , who had married King Henry VII .

On February 4, 1495, Anne married Thomas Howard (later the 3rd Duke of Norfolk) at Westminster Abbey . Howard was the eldest son and heir to Sir Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk and his first wife Elizabeth Tilney. However, since Thomas Howard inherited the titles of Earl of Surrey and Duke of Norfolk only after Anne's death, she was known only as Lady Howard.

The only son who is known for sure is Thomas Howard (approx. 1496–1508).

death

Anne died on November 23, 1511 and was buried in Thetford Priory. After the Reformation in England she was transferred to St Michael's Church in Framlingham along with other members of the Howard family .

Her widower Thomas Howard married Lady Elizabeth Stafford, with whom he had several children.
