Matthias Geist

Matthias Geist (born September 4, 1969 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian Evangelical Lutheran pastor and has been superintendent of the Evangelical Superintendent of Vienna since December 1, 2018 .

Life

Matthias Geist was born in Salzburg as the third child of the Protestant pastor of Vöcklabruck at the time , Till Geist, and his wife Adelheit (née Herz). He grew up in rectories in Vöcklabruck, Arnoldstein , Spittal an der Drau and Trebesing , where his father worked. In 1987 he passed the Matura. He studied mathematics (Mag. Rer. Nat .; graduated in 1993) and Protestant theology (Mag. Theol.) At the University of Vienna , where he worked with Falk Wagner and Ulrich Körtner in 2001 on the subject of religion in the rectory PhD (Dr. theol.).

He worked as a study / contract assistant at the Institute for Systematic Theology and completed the vicariate in Vienna-Landstrasse ( Pauluskirche ) until 1999 . His ordination took place on February 20, 2000 by Bishop Herwig Sturm.

From 2001 Geist worked as a prison chaplain in the 4 (originally 5) Vienna prisons and in 2 police detention centers , from 2011 as a lecturer at the Prison Academy (subjects for prison guards: ethics, the world of prisons, pastoral care). From 2012 to 2017 he was a member of the European board of the ecumenical prison chaplaincy "International Prison Chaplains' Association" (IPCA Europe), since 2015 in the worldwide UN team for Geneva and Vienna ( United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime - UNODC).

Since December 1, 2018, he has been Superintendent of the Evangelical Superintendent of Vienna (election on June 9, 2018) as successor to Hansjörg Lein .
