Annot (born December 27, 1894 in Berlin as Anna Ottonie Krigar-Menzel , † October 20, 1981 in Munich ) was a German painter, art teacher, art writer and pacifist .

Life

Annot comes from an upper-class academic family. Her father Otto Krigar-Menzel was professor for theoretical physics at the Technical University in Berlin, her mother Jacoba Krigar-Menzel, née Elling, trained classical singer. Her godparents included the composer Johannes Brahms and the painter Adolph Menzel , who was also her great-uncle.

First artistic training at the drawing and painting school of the Association of Artists and Art Friends in Berlin . In 1915 Annot studied in Lovis Corinth's painting school . In 1916, in protest against the war, she distributed a pacifist memorandum that she had written herself, for which she was jailed for 30 days. From 1917 to 1918 she lived in Oslo , where she continued to work for peace. In 1920 he returned to Berlin and worked in the German League for Human Rights and its predecessor organization, Bund Neues Vaterland, and the International Women's League for Peace and Freedom .

In 1924 she married the painter Rudolf Jacobi . She lived with him in Positano from 1923 to 1926 . The daughter Stella Diana was born on May 22, 1925, and Annot traveled to Berlin to give birth. In 1926 she went to Paris for further artistic training at the painting school of André Lhote . Together with her husband, the artist opened the Annot painting school in Berlin in 1928 . In 1929 son Frank-Arne was born. In 1933 the couple's teaching permit was withdrawn by order of the National Socialists and they had to close the school in 1933. One reason was the refusal to fire Jewish students.

Annot emigrated to the USA with her husband in 1934 , where she founded the "Annot Art School" in the Rockefeller Building NYC. The pictures of her in public collections (Kronprinzen-Palais) were described in Nazi Germany as " degenerate " and destroyed. The artist was represented in the United States by the Marie Sterner Gallery and the Van Damien-Lilienfeld Galleries, among others. In 1935 she was awarded the gold medal for her picture Käthe Kruse and her children at the 44th annual exhibition of women painters and sculptors in New York City , now owned by the Stadtmuseum Berlin . Annot also earned her living with art lectures and works as an interior and interior designer. The Jacobis continued to be involved in the peace movement (Quaker), which was no longer politically compliant in the USA after the start of the war in 1942.

In 1956, Annot and her spouse moved to Puerto Rico to live with their friend Pablo Casals . Here, too, Annot continued her pacifist engagement by campaigning against nuclear armament. In 1967 Annot and Rudolf Jacobi returned to Germany and settled in Munich.

Artistic work

From 1928 to 1930 Annot worked on the cycle of paintings The Face of the Working Woman . Stylistic and a influenced by French Impressionism , Annot's works of this time are characterized by a loose, generous surface treatment. The painting cycle shows portraits of a surgeon, a lawyer or a physiotherapist. Annelie Lütgens writes about these representations: "Annot connects the individual portraits with a general appreciation and psychological description of the working woman around 1930."
