The Anscavallo

The Anscavallo is a sculpture that is located on the Ansbacher Schlossplatz. It was built by the sculptor Jürgen Goertz . He set up the sculpture on July 25, 1993 as a result of an ideas competition for the design of the square near the main entrance to the residence . The name consists of Ans- as a word component of Ansbach and -cavallo , which means horse in Italian and is also intended to indicate the cavalry .

It is the largest of several works of art on Schlossplatz; Next to it there are two shelters with flight ducks on the roof, as well as the Ansbachchantin , a fountain that shows an Amazon woman enjoying wine and various wheels around it symbolizing the busy traffic.

layout

The overall picture of the sculpture is a horse of bronze is standing on two separate sockets. The only front leg consists of a turned bar, above which the egg-shaped chest, the swan-like neck and the three-eyed head are attached; the mane consists of gear parts . Behind the roughly ringed, cylindrical belly is the full buttocks, the disheveled tail made of cast vine hair and finally the double leg with the baroque profile. An anus can be guessed from the gold-colored horse droppings attached to the rear base element .

In the front part, the sculpture stands for the technology, in the back part, due to its more realistic design, for nature. It is also reminiscent of baroque riding horses or Kaspar Hauser's hobby horse . The Anscavallo also refers to what was then Ansbach as a garrison town and the connection between tradition and modernity.

criticism

The Anscavallo was controversially discussed in public and sometimes received a critical response, up to and including efforts to have the sculpture dismantled.
