Anselm Franz von Bentzel-Sternau

Anselm Franz Hermann Christoph Freiherr von Bentzel Augustin-Sternau , or Anselm Franz von Bentzel for short (born August 28, 1738 in Mainz , † March 7, 1786 at Emmerichshofen Palace ) was a Minister of Kurmainz , curator and reorganizer of the Old University of Mainz.

Life

Anselm Franz was the son of the imperial Reichshofrat and kurmainzischen Hofkanzlers Johann Jakob Freiherr von Bentzel .

At the age of 19, after studying law in Mainz, Erfurt, Vienna and Wetzlar, he became court and government councilor in Mainz. There he developed into a supporter of the Enlightenment in the political school of Minister Anton Heinrich Friedrich von Stadion .

Elector Emmerich Joseph von Breidbach zu Bürresheim appointed him secretary of the office in 1763, vice-chancellor in 1771 and chancellor in 1773. After the Mainz Jesuits were eliminated , Bentzel played a key role in reforming the monastery and school system. In 1766 he built Emmerichshofen Castle and named it after his sponsor.
