The Ansgarkirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the Hamburg district of Langenhorn , built in 1929/1930, and the first church to be built in this district.

building

The design comes from the architects Herrmann Geissler and Otto Wilkening and consists of a central, cubic brick building with a hipped roof and a slim, flat-roofed tower. The interior is designed rather conservatively due to its classic floor plan with side aisles and semicircular apse. A parish hall is integrated into the building, so that the church looks more stately from the outside than it actually is from the volume of the worship space.

In 2011 the church was completely renovated.

Furnishing

The chancel is dominated by a large wooden cross. In addition to this, the black and white reproduction of the altarpieces originally intended for the church on the organ loft is particularly striking. Anita Rée designed these pictures in 1931, but the originals were never in the church as they were rejected by the church council at the time in 1935. The originals came to the main church St. Nikolai and were probably destroyed there during the bombing raids on Hamburg in World War II. The theme of the triptych was the Passion of Christ , consisting of the entry into Jerusalem , the Lord's Supper , the arrest in Gethsemane and the parable of the wise and the foolish virgins . Today's reproductions have been hanging in the church since the 1990s.

At the exhibition Anita Rée - Retrospective from October 2017 to February 2018 in the Hamburger Kunsthalle , the two altarpiece designs from 1930 Entry into Jerusalem and Arrest in Gethsemane (also Judas Kiss ) of the rejected altar triptych, which is part of the collection of the art historian Maike Bruhns, were shown were. After contacting Maike Bruhns and her subsequent visit to the Ansgar Church, the parish council decided in May to buy it and started a call for donations, which led to the Sütterlinstube Hamburg donating one of the designs and the second design to be acquired. On September 15, 2018, the designs were presented as part of the Night of Churches event in Ansgarkirche.

Bells

The first set of three bells was hung in 1930. These bells were made of steel and tuned in the tones E, G and A, but had to be replaced in 2008 for reasons of age. The current bells are three bronze bells in the tones C, F sharp and A, which originally hung in the Kapernaum Church in Hamburg-Horn , which was closed in 2004 . All three bells have Bible texts as inscriptions, the largest z. B. Behold, I proclaim to you great joy which will be to all people; for to you today the Savior is born, who is Christ the Lord. ( Lk 2,10f  LUT ) Two of the old steel bells are still in the outside area next to the church.

Console of the Hans-Henny-Jahnn organ

The organ was designed by Hans Henny Jahnn and installed in 1931 by P. Furtwängler & Hammer . It has been preserved in the original pipe factory to this day and has only been extensively restored by the Jehmlich company once in 2008 . This makes it one of the few surviving Jahnn organs. It is one of the first large organs to be given a mechanical action as the organ moved . A special feature is the division of the registers into the pages feminine (left) and masculine (right). Feminine refers to the flute and reed parts as well as most of the aliquot stops , while masculine includes the principal choir and the mixed voices .
