The Sütterlinstube Hamburg is an association with the aim of activating the ability to read and write German script . He provides support with the transliteration of texts from the German into the Latin script . The association is the first and largest of its kind in Germany. The name is based on the Sütterlin script created in 1911 , which was banned at the time of National Socialism and was therefore no longer legible for later generations.

society

The Sütterlinstube Hamburg is organized in the legal form of a registered association. The association works on a voluntary basis, but accepts donations that are used, among other things, for social projects and funding. The Sütterlinstube, located in the Ansgar nursing home at Reekamp 49-51 in Hamburg-Langenhorn , has existed since 1996 and in 2009 became an association with a recognized charitable status. In addition to texts in the Sütterlin script, texts in the German Kurrent script , in the German chancellery script and in the shorthand Stolze-Schrey previously used in Germany have been transferred from the Sütterlinstube . The association also offers courses in Sütterlin at the Volkshochschule Hamburg-Ost as well as a correspondence course in Sütterlin by email.

Projects

One of the biggest projects of the Sütterlinstube so far was the transmission of over 1,000 letters from the family of the Altona landscape painter Louis Gurlitt . Another major project was the 2,000 manuscript pages in 10 volumes of the chronicle 1650–1911 of the Runge family, which also included Daniel Nikolaus Runge , the Hamburg merchant, shipowner and poet Daniel Runge , the Hamburg painter Philipp Otto Runge , the Hamburg sculptor Otto Sigismund Runge and Pastor Daniel Runge belonged. There are also diaries of the Hamburg painter Fritz Friedrichs , family letters of the painter and engraver Friedrich Wilhelm Delkeskamp and court records to unauthorized reproductions of his works as well as letters and treatises of the landscape painter Wilhelm Steinhausen , letters and notes of the painter and sculptor Bruno Piglhein , correspondence of the Hamburg composer Oscar Fetrás with the Viennese composer family Strauss , correspondence of the literary scholar and philosopher Friedrich Theodor Vischer , letters and texts of the publicist and writer August Adolph von Hennings , letters of the poet August Thieme , diaries of the later Reichsführer of the SS Heinrich Himmler and letters and texts of many other known and unknown personalities . The International Maritime Museum Hamburg is one of the clients . By August 2017, around 3,500 orders had been processed, which now come from all over the world.

The Sütterlinstube also runs funding projects. Among other things, as book sponsor , she took over the restoration costs for De Messias (Dutch) by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (three volumes) and three views of the church, for which she was awarded a certificate by the Hamburg State and University Library . The church views were a lithograph by FI Stock based on a drawing by Hermann Peter Fersenfeldt of the main church Sankt Jacobi from 1825, a lithograph showing the ruins of the Hamburg Cathedral from approx. 1806 and a colored drawing by Johann David Fritzsche from 1761 , which represents the former Altona town church St. Trinitatis .

Around the middle of 2018, the Sütterlinstube of the Ansgar Church in Hamburg-Langenhorn donated one of the two designs for a probably no longer existent altar triptych by Anita Rée , which the church wanted to purchase with donations from the art historian Maike Bruhns , so that the church only had the other design to finance with donations. The two designs are entitled Entry into Jerusalem and Arrest in Gethsemane (also known as Judas' kiss ).
