Antonio de Aguiar Patriota (born April 27, 1954 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a non-party Brazilian politician . He was foreign minister from January 1, 2011 to August 26, 2013 and was then appointed UN ambassador for his country. Patriota is in favor of expanding relations with Africa and seeking a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council .

Patriota studied philosophy at the University of Geneva and from 1979, in preparation for his diplomatic career, international relations at the Rio Branco Institute in Brazil. He had the best academic performance there among any student in his class.

Before he became Foreign Minister, he was a. a. in 2004 State Secretary for Diplomatic Planning, Head of Cabinet of Celso Amorim , from 2005 to 2007 Undersecretary for Political Affairs and from 2007 to 2008 Brazilian Ambassador to Washington . From 2009 to 2010 he was Secretary General for Foreign Affairs in the Lula da Silva government .

Antonio Patriota is married to Tania Cooper Patriota , UN Population Fund representative for Colombia and Venezuela. He has two sons, Michael and Thomas.
