Location of the Anta da Arca in Portugal.

The Anta de Arca (also called Anta do Espírito Santo d'Arca ( German  Dolmen of the Holy Spirit ) or Pedra dos Mouros ( German  Stone of the Moors )) is a megalithic complex in Paranho de Arca , in the municipality ( Freguesia ) Arca e Varzielas im Circle ( concelho ) Oliveira de Frades , in Serra do Caramulo, up to 1,075 meters high, in the Viseu district in northern Portugal . The Anta is located at the northern exit of Paranha de Arca.

Anta , Mámoa , Dolmen , Orca and Lapa are the common names in Portugal for the approximately 5000 megalithic structures that were built during the Neolithic in the west of the Iberian Peninsula by the successors of the Cardial or Imprint culture .

Monument preservation

The complex was described in a church book as early as 1758 and documented in drawings by José de Leite de Vasconcellos in 1898 . An archaeological study of the site was carried out in 1921.

The megalithic grave was registered and protected as a Monumento Nacional in 1910 and is now located in an area that is used as a picnic and playground.

Finding

The polygonal chamber with a size of approximately 4.5 × 3.75 m and a height of 2.65 m with seven preserved support stones ( orthostats ) made of granite is preserved . Three of them are still in situ and carry the capstone with a size of 4.2 × 3.2 m. The keystone of the tomb faces due east. The archaeological investigation carried out in 1921 did not reveal any evidence of a passage or remnants of a hill ( Mámoa ).

Finds

Presumably the Anta was already robbed of antiquity, as the excavation did not reveal any findings.
