Anta da Candieira
The Anta da Candieira (also Anta Herdade da Candieira ) is a megalithic complex to the right of the road between Redondo and Estremoz in the Évora district of the Alentejo just before the bridge over the Ribeira da Candieira (river) near the village of Aldeia da Serra in Portugal . Anta is the Portuguese name for around 5000 megalithic structures or dolmens that were built during the Neolithic in the west of the Iberian Peninsula by the successors of the cardial or imprint culture .
Anta , made of slate , can also be identified on old depictions by its coat of arms-shaped hole broken through the front stone . The breakthrough is made with metal tools and does not date from the time the grave was erected. The observation of mortar in the access area of the chamber has led to the assumption that the Anta served as a hermitage in the Middle Ages . In the Serra de Ossa there are numerous testimonies to hermits in written sources.
Nearby is the Gruta do Escoural .
