Antelmo di Chignin or Anthelm von Belley (* 1107 in Chignin ; † June 26, 1178 in Belley ) was prior of the Carthusians La Grande Chartreuse and La Chartreuse de Portes and Bishop of Belley .

Life

He was born in 1107 near Chambéry in what was then the Arelat , now the French region of Savoy . He later became a secular priest, a canon in Belley and the owner of other benefices that made him wealthy. He gave up this again at the age of 30. Then he entered the Charterhouse of Portes . He made his profession at the request of Prior Hugo in the Great Charterhouse. Two years later he was elected prior of the Great Charterhouse, the mother house of the order, which had been destroyed shortly before on January 30, 1132 by a stone avalanche; seven monks were dead. In 1141 he was promoted to the order's first prior general.

He proved to be a good steward, so that the community grew in number and the spiritual life advanced. He had the buildings rebuilt with an aqueduct and a defensive wall two kilometers from the original location, as the location was better protected there. The rules of the order were unified during his time and adapted for the entry of women in their own homes. He achieved the closer ties of the other Carthusians to the mother house. Among the monks was Hugh of Lincoln , who was a great admirer of Antelmo.

In 1151 he resigned from office. In 1152 he returned to the Grand Chartreuse and supported Pope Alexander III. against the antipope Viktor IV. Alexander appointed him Bishop of Belley in 1163 . According to tradition, he did not compromise and was fearless in clerical reform and diocesan matters. For example, he excommunicated Humbert von Maurienne when the latter arrested a priest and murdered another. But this was by Pope Alexander III. canceled again at the request of Humbert. Then he withdrew from his diocese.

The Pope then sent him to England to reconcile King Henry II with Thomas Becket . However, he was unable to take this trip for health reasons. He returned to Belly to take care of the poor and lepers.

Anthelm died in Belley in 1178. When Humbert found him on his deathbed, he realized that he regretted his previous actions.
