Anthemios of Tralleis
Anthemios von Tralleis (* in Tralleis (today Aydın ) in Lydia in the 2nd half of the 5th century ; † before 558 , probably in Constantinople ) was a late antique mathematician , scholar and architect .
Live and act
Anthemios was the son of a doctor named Stephanos and was considered an excellent mathematician, although he could celebrate even greater success as an architect. From 532 to 537 , Anthemios built the church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople together with Isidore von Milet on behalf of the Eastern Roman emperor Justinian I.
According to the historian Prokopios' report , both architects were in charge of the work. Anthemios made the model of the building. According to the price poem Ekphrasis by Paulos Silentiarios , however, Anthemios mainly dealt with the foundations. At the time of the dome collapse in May 558, Anthemios was no longer alive.
On behalf of Justinian, Anthemios, who is highly praised by Agathias in his historical work, and Isidore were also entrusted with other tasks. For example, they should find a way to stop the flooding at the Dara-Anastasiupolis fortress .
He is also said to have tried to recreate the mirror construction of Archimedes, with which he is said to have set Roman ships on fire during the battle of Syracuse. Despite great efforts, he never succeeded. The "focal mirror legend" is now regarded as an actual legend.
