Anthonie Braakman
Anthonie (Anton) Braakman , also Braakmann or Brakman , (* 1811 , baptized October 21, 1811 in Rotterdam , † August 13, 1870 in Stuttgart ) was a Dutch landscape painter who mainly worked in Germany.
Braakman was initially a student of the successful Andreas Schelfhout in The Hague and adopted his romantic style of painting and his preference for winter landscapes. After a few years of independent employment in Rotterdam, Braakman traveled through the German-speaking countries and northern Italy until, allegedly around 1840, he settled as a theater painter in Stuttgart. But five of his signed paintings in the Focke-Museum Bremen are still dated 1841 and 1843. These are Bremen views that are reminiscent of the genre of Dutch river landscapes of the 17th century. But their mood is unmistakably Biedermeier in character, in that the urban landscapes are portrayed as contemplative and manageable worlds, in winter silence or in the evening peace.
