Andreas Schelfhout
Andreas Schelfhout (born February 16, 1787 in The Hague ; † April 19, 1870 there ) was a Dutch painter.
Schelfhout was a student of the theater painter Johannes Breckenheimer , but specialized in landscape painting . At the age of 28 he made his artistic breakthrough with a “winter landscape”.
In addition to the landscapes of his homeland, Schelfhout repeatedly addressed winter landscapes throughout his life. In his early work the style of the old masters still dominated, but after a few years Schelfhout had found his own style and - especially in his winter landscapes - artistically joined his contemporaries. He mainly painted small-format pictures; This type of painting is therefore also called “Schelfhoutjes” in painting circles. The Museum Fodor in Amsterdam and the museums of Haarlem , Rotterdam , Enschede and Ghent own pictures of him .
The painter Andreas Schelfhout died on April 19, 1870 in The Hague at the age of 83. The painter and graphic artist Lodewijk Schelfhout (1881–1943) is a grandson.
His grave is in the Dutch cemetery Oud Eik en Duinen in The Hague .
